Mcphee Architects - Domestic

Extensions

Extensions vary incredibly, both in terms of size and complexity, but also in terms of design intent - whether to be quiet and low profile, blending in with the original building - or to be more bold and modern creating a contrast with the original fabric. All of the following were procured using our drawings only service where the client found their own builders.

Bridge View, Milford

A new bedroom above an extended kitchen with a single storey lean to extension to the family room. The quality of light and feeling of space is tremendous. Our clients love it!

Etwall Road, Mickleover

Very similar to the Burton Road extension and built about the same time. The extension can clearly be seen on the left hand side in brickwork to contrast with the render of the original house. Small scale forms break up the overall outline and help create that fragmented appearance of many traditional cottages.

We've just been commissioned by the same clients again and have recently obtained planning approval for a family room extension on the rear. Due to be built this Summer - check back for some more images

Beckstitch Lane, Belper

In the past we've done many loft conversions, this one needed the roof removing, raising and re-building at a steeper pitch to create enough living space. We added a new dormer window and the client dug out the frontage to create a couple of off street parking spaces. On site at present, check back in a few weeks for progress.

Hazelwood Road, Duffield

A huge extension on an already large house which required some renovations at the same time. Now 6 bedrooms it must be worth just over £1million in this very desirable location in Duffield. It has one of the largest double garages we've ever designed together with a beautiful rear balcony at first floor offering stunning views from the master bedroom across the valley to the Chevin hillside. One of those where the new works contrast with the original. The central section was conceived as an abstract composition of rectangular openings, each one offers a discrete view out from a point on the balcony or half way down the winder staircase, or spills light at ankle level onto one of the stair treads. Project value approx £120k excluding the clients own decorations and kitchen fit out.

Intakes Lane, Turnditch

A beautiful oak framed sun lounge type extension and entrance canopy which together with new windows transformed the appearance of the original rather dull looking house - clients words not ours ! A surprisingly contemporary feel out of what is very traditional materials and detailing

West Terrace Milford

This small front extension to a grade 2 listed terrace in Milford's conservation area and the Derwent Mills World Heritage Site is intended to look lightweight and contrast with the original fabric. A design approach now in favour with most conservation authorities and English Heritage, it allows us to add quite refreshing contemporary additions.

Catchfrench, Belper

A large double garage with a master bedroom & en-suite to the rear, with a new single storey sun lounge extension and a two storey bedroom 'tower' on the front. The interior was completely stripped and re-modelled. Note the bedroom balcony giving fantastic views across the Chevin hillside. Materials and forms are sympathetic with the original.

Potlocks Farm, Findern

We designed two extensions, one at each end of this long thin farmhouse, creating new bedrooms at first floor and a 'sun room' extension to the ground floor living room. David also designed a new triple garage off the rear of the old stables which themselves were converted. A new roof over the entrance helped complete the sense of enclosure of the clients private rear garden.family room extension on the rear.
